Used on-site, the package gives presentations on site rules,
hazards and housekeeping, emergency procedures and other activities
- for example driver loading procedures.
Amtek developed the concept for the package and delivered all
elements of the production, including design, script-writing,
video shooting and post production, software engineering and
system validation. The entire package was produced in less than
five months.
As part of Shell's safety training programme at the Haven Oil
Site the system is used by all visitors and employees at the
site, including contractors and drivers.
Following log-on, users view the presentations relevant to
their role and at the end of the training session are tested
on key safety facts. All questions must be answered correctly
to finish the training session. Results are recorded and stored
in a database, giving Shell Safety Officers the facility to
check that individuals have completed their safety induction.
At the end of the training session a certificate is printed
showing when the safety induction should be re-sat in order
to obtain a new training certificate.
Other options offered by Amtek for use with this type of system
include transfer of data to a master record via a dial-up network,
updating of presentation material over a network and the use
of smart swipe cards to hold an individual's safety training
data.
Site Safety Officer, Barry Allum, commented "This system
is available 24 hours a day and now all newcomers to Shell Haven
can receive a safety induction at any time."
Amtek's Managing Director, Graham Meek, added "This type
of technology provides a cost-effective means of giving essential
safety training on a just-in-time basis. We are sure that other
industry sectors will adopt this to meet their specific safety
and procedural training objectives."
