A computer based safety induction
learning system installed at Shell Haven Oils Site in July 2000
has helped deliver an outstanding safety record. Amtek's safety
induction system has delivered training to over 3000 visitors
and workers at the site during a period of great change and
risk. During this time the site reached a record of 1983 days
between Lost Time Accidents (L.T.A.s), with only one LTA being
recorded from installation of the system to date.
That achievement is all the more
remarkable as Shell Haven has been through a substantial demolition
and reclamation process, bringing many new contractors to the
site. The induction system runs without trainer input and uses
touch-screens and voice-over to allow workers who may not have
keyboard skills to easily move through their course of training.
By first asking the user to select their job-role the system
delivers only appropriate training, for example ground workers
will not complete sections designed specifically for tanker
drivers.
The system includes an end test and
requires users to complete questions correctly before they can
progress, ensuring that only inductees who have demonstrated
the required knowledge level are allowed access to the site.
Once the course is complete the system issues a certificate
indicating the type of training undertaken and giving a date
by which refresher training should be undertaken. The system
includes a database of test results allowing managers to review
users' performance and check for completion. Because of its
ease of use, 24/7 availability and focus on the individual learners'
requirements the system has proven very popular with both users
and managers at the site.
Amtek supplied a complete turnkey
system and based on the numbers trained to date the cost per
induction is approximately £10, allowing for three or
four more years service that figure could drop to less than
£5.
